Why Background Matters in Your Photos

Whether you’re an aspiring photographer or you’re an Instagram hustler searching for ways to improve the quality of your social media images, the background of your photos is important. Yet, it’s often forgotten about in the midst of a photoshoot.

Even if you’re taking close-up product photos, you can’t neglect the background of your images. It’s just as important as the foreground. You can use a neutral, one-toned backdrop or a bright and vibrant background, depending on the overall aims of your photoshoot.

There really is no way of getting around choosing your background appropriately. Even if you choose the blur your background, it still needs to look great.

How to Take a Photo With a Great Background

From product photos to stunning landscape images, you need to consider your background before anything else. It’s no good to set up your products or subjects before organizing your backdrop.

Examine the entire scene and consider which colors and styles would be the most appropriate for your images. You also need to take into account the overall vibe that you’re going for with your photo shoot.

What Message Are You Trying to Send in Your Photos?

What message are you trying to communicate? What atmosphere do you want to create? The answers to these questions will influence the background that you choose.

For example, if you want to create a set of product photos that display the professionalism of your brand and entice your audience to make a purchase, it’s best to use a neutral background. You could also blur the background and use a transparent PNG tool to draw people’s attention to your products.

If you want to create an intriguing photo that makes your viewers feel like they are being transported into the scene, you might want to use a more detailed background. For example, if you’re taking photos for a model’s portfolio, you might choose a park or beach where viewers can take in the whole scene.

How Does the Background Interact with the Foreground?

Creating a cohesive photo requires you to consider how the background and foreground of your photos interact with one another. Look at your photo composition and identify the relationship between your subject or product and the things behind it.

In images where you want the viewer to focus on the photos as a whole, instead of just one area of it, you need to strike the perfect balance between foreground and background. You need to create images that draw your viewer’s attention across the whole photo and not just to one area of it.

Natural or Artificial?

When you’re deciding on a background for your images, ask yourself whether you want to use a natural scene or artificial background. If you’re going for a simplistic approach to your photography, such as you would with product photos, you can use a neutral backdrop that doesn’t distract your audience.

For portrait photography, you might prefer to use a natural background that complements your subject perfectly, such as a forest trail or urban jungle.
