Main Types of VPN

A VPN is a service that allows users to create a secured private connection that is end-to-end encrypted, allowing data to be transferred anonymously. A VPN uses several different types of protocols to make this encryption, and in this article, we will discuss the three main types of VPNs and try to find out which one best suits your needs.

Types of VPN explained

There are three main types of VPN:

1. Remote access VPNs

2. Personal VPN services

3. Mobile VPNs

Each of these VPNs has its own use case, and in this guide, we explain each of these VPN types in more detail. We’ll cover how they work and try to find out if they fit your needs.

Remote access VPNs

Using a remote access VPN, you can connect to a private network, such as the office network of your company. Most businesses use remote-access VPNs to allow their employees to securely connect to their office network and send sensitive official documents.

Remote access VPNs have been particularly useful during the pandemic when most people were working remotely from home. It is usually set up by the company IT department, and they have a mac address of your devices saved in their server. This allows the system to check if your device is permitted to access the network and only grant authorization if the mac address matches.

Remote-access VPNs are not usually used for personal use.

Personal VPN services

A personal VPN service connects you to a secured VPN server and helps you bypass any surveillance by your ISP by creating an encrypted connection. The personal VPN hides your online identity and enables you to spoof your geographic location.

Want to access geo-blocked content? Or keep your identity anonymous when browsing? Personal VPN services will get you covered. It is by far the most popular VPNs type out there and is often the cheapest.

So how does a personal VPN differ from remote access VPNs? Well, the main difference is that remote access creates a separate network, and only the members of that particular organization can enter the network.

Personal VPN services are perfectly safe for most people and are highly recommended by cyber experts worldwide for added security. If you ever need to make online transactions or access sensitive data, try signing up for a free VPN.

Mobile VPNs

While a remote access network assumes that the users will stay in one location, personal and mobile VPNs are better options if you need a secured connection on the go. A mobile VPN maintains the connection even if the user changes their WiFi or cellular network, experiences connectivity issues, or turns their device for an extended period of time.

Mobile VPNs are particularly useful for people who use the internet during transit or are constantly traveling. One important thing to note is that mobile VPNs can be used on any device and any connection: it doesn’t have to be a mobile phone on a mobile network.

We prefer mobile VPNs for the stable connection they provide.

Summary

If you are currently employed or have a business that requires a new VPN service, consider Remote access VPNs. They are completely secured and do not allow anyone else to access your private network.

But for general use, either a Personal VPN service or Mobile VPN will do the job. They both offer stable connections and allow users to connect to the internet anonymously so that no one can peep or geo-lock their internet connection.
